Nice article, SC
Do people think that an Islamic state is on the horizon, or a return to despotism as the goverment tries to remain in control?

The Iraqi goverment does not stand a chance by itself with it's present condition. The UN should get involved. As long as the Shiites and Sunnis are not willing to compromise, then there will never be peace in Iraq.

Personally I dont think UN would step into such a mine field, there could be a possiblity of the nation just coming apart like with Yugoslavia?

What would be the problem with Iraq splitting? Iraq is an artificial country born of European imperialism with borders crafted by the straightest-edged rulers.
The problem with Yugoslavia is that they then started killing each other. In the case of Iraq, I could see problems with the Kurds wanting Kurdish areas of Turkey, Syria and Iran.

Do people think that an Islamic state is on the horizon, or a return to despotism as the goverment tries to remain in control? Neither for as long as possible. The "coalition" wants their shining example to look like it's working. After that, I think the US would be more favourable to a Central Asia type autocracy than an Iran style theocracy.

I truely don't know what to think, but whatever happens the bombings will go on, as will the continuous assinations of Government ministers and kidnappings, etc.
Either way its far too soon for everyone to be saying "Ok, times up guys. We're moving out." Shaking Iraq pro-verbal hand and trundling off to Korea or wherever's next.
My two-pence anyway, i'll shut up now.

Hi gratedlemons feel free to have you say and keep typing:.D!
Along with the kurdish problem you also have issues between sunni and sheite (sp) ethnic groups as well, you quite right imperialism enforced its own boarders and we are getting a lot of trouble with that now in africa especially.

A seperate Kurdish state might ease some of the ethnic problems. But, Kurds from Turkey and Iran might want to move and that could cause all sorts of problems. It's a real mess in Iraq. I am in support of troops withdrwal but we can't just have them pulled out tomorrow, that would cause a collapse in the goverment. The Iraqi army needs more training. The problem is that they see themselves as being ethier Sunni or Shiite, instead of looking at the bigger picture which makes them ALL Iraqis.

But what is an Iraqi? As I've said, the Iraqi state was manufactured by the British and there wasn't a group living there that identified itself as Iraqi.

I know this sounds odd but they should consider themselves Iraqis now. That is the nation these groups live in and that is what they all have in common, it might be enough to unify them if they look at it that way.

Old habits die hard, so i can't see all of them uniting under one Government....
