I don't think Japan had the manpower to fight further than Mandchouria (all Mandchouria, including russian one).

Here here, a good alternate history would be: what would have happened had Russia not undergone the october revolution? There are lots of factors involved! Had just the February Revolution taken place and Kerensky's government managed to take Russia out of WW1 on reasonable terms, whilst at the same time seeing off both the counter-Revolutionary threat (the reactionary Tsarists) and the Bolshevik-Revolutionary Threat (Lenin et al), perhaps a stable liberal democracy would have been established. However, I expect that the Russian Empire would have completely crumbled under a moderate social-democrat regime and that this system of governance would not have fared well in the Great Depression. Either the extreme-Left would have come to power anyway or Tsarism would have been reinstated. Something like that!

Good point, Russia certainly wouldn't have been able to survive the Depression. Might have gone like Bulgaria and joined the Axis. Ohh, so many possibilities

Indeed, the wonders of history :.D
Ah yes I was referring to that battle, those siberian troops were very useful to the USSR if they had been defeated then they would not have been movable and Russia would have had a harder time on the western front.

Umm .. We are discussing war.. Hmm tactics, friendly fire, and all the other things that politics imposes upon us. So it is glorious to die for your country while the ones who have instigated this make well sure that they and their families are well safe within their bunkers and definitely outside any line of fire. Lets sacrifice our children to the greater good.
War is a terrible thing and can only occur when the ruling classes disagree and force sufficient propaganda upon the ordinary people to compel them into conflict. In WW1 no end of soldiers were executed for "cowardice" for refusing to run from the trenches as cannon fodder. Where were these very brave accusers... probably several miles away discussing the best tactics that would account for the least casualties. No one but a madman declares war (GWB may not be mad but he is under control of madmen like his father and cronies)
Aargh am I alone in thinking why don't we talk about our differences and try to resolve conflicts of opinion through peaceful channels?
Does a nation gain stature because it is willing to sacrifice it's own children?
War is not glorious. It is a quirk of the human race that we should eternally hang our heads in shame for

Are you sure you didn't mean to post that in the "War is Desirable?" thread?

.......anyway, war is indeed a terrible thing, but some things have just got to be fought for.
