The Iranian goverment has to say those slogans or it would lose all respect in the arab community, nuclear war would destroy the state which would go against all they have worked for. most people dont want the bombs to start a war, they just want the power the bombs give diplomatically.

After the latest "Israel must be wiped off the map" speech by Iranian President Ahmadinedschad, followed by thousands of people waving burning Israeli flags, I really wonder how much of this is voter-pleasing rhetoric (and state-orchestrated action) and how much of it has to be taken seriously.
Yes, some of the mullahs publicly revoked Ahmadinedschads statement, but again, to what degree can they be trusted, or do they have influence?
If anything, this doesn't strengthen my belief that allowing Iran to own nukes would be a good idea.

From a western perspective where the voters ( in particular the US ) where Iran has been branded as a member of the "Axis of Evil" it's easy to assume that the Iranian regime wants nuclear weapons because they intend to do something very bad with them and wipe out America or it's allies. The point in having nukes is to have them. Not use them. Isreal has nukes, so has the US. Iran won't be launching a nuke on their neighbours only to face massive US retaliation and the destruction of their regime.
It is worth trying to prevent Iran from developing nukes, but it's not something worth a war over and should definitly not be used as a justification for imperialist manoeuvers in this oil-rich region.
