Interview with Consul Aesculapius

Following the article concerning the elections in the Meritocracy, where our own Blackbird is running under the alias Cortath, we have secured an interview with the outgoing Consul, Aesculapius.
Enjoy comrades,
VOTP: Greetings friend so tell me how did you start out in ns and how did you find your current home the meritocracy?
Aesculapius: I started out in NS simply by a friend giving me the link. I’m a bit of a political junkie, so I dived right in. I don’t recall which Pacific I started out in, but I didn’t stay there too long anyway- I looked around the forums and found a post someone made about the bigger player-created regions. I believe that I traveled to Europe first, and then to the Meritocracy shortly after. When I applied for citizenship there, I only had about a 9 million population. (Try that nowadays!) So I consider and always have considered the Meritocracy as my home.
VOTP: Why did you want to become consul?
Aes: I thought that the Meritocracy had taken a path that many did not agree with, and would lead to a large amount internal strife. That isn’t to say that we now have a panacea of love, but the Meritocracy has always had disagreements. However, I believe that we no longer have disagreements that threaten to destroy us from within.
VOTP: What are the most rewarding and annoying aspects of being consul?
Aes: I’d suppose being Consul is a lot like being a leader anywhere- you get a lot of respect, but when anything goes wrong, you’re first in line to be blamed. You are, for better or for worse, responsible. Also, as Consul, I have to deal with that smelly old Cortath. (Just kidding )
VOTP: What are in your opinion, the true ideals of the Meritocracy?
Aes: I believe that the true ideal of the Meritocracy is that people should have the liberty to choose their own path and make their own way in life. I also believe that we’re strong believers in the idea of a Meritocracy- that if you allow people this freedom, they’ll rise to the challenge.
VOTP: Is it true that as some have said in the ADN, that the Meritocracy thinks the rest of the game are "shitstains"?
Aes: That is completely false, and I would suggest that those who believe that actually come over and grab a drink in The Bar. I think we have an incredible group of people who come from very diverse backgrounds, many of which are heavily involved in the outside world. Take LadyRebels for example, or Minineenee, or heck, Cortath. In any case, I have never, ever heard a Senator refer to the outside world in that manner, or frankly, in any way that even resembles that. Nor have they shown that attitude through their actions. Different individuals in the Senate may have varying opinions of various organizations, and I can’t answer for them anyway, but as far as I’ve seen, the Senate as a whole has the utmost respect for the NS world.
VOTP: Tell us your thoughts on the dissolution of the ADMA treaty? Do you feel the alliance is being unreasonable?
Aes: I simply believe that the Meritocracy should take a different path than the one that the ADMA requires.
VOTP: Getting in depth do you feel somewhat betrayed by ex Consul Unistrut and his polarizing switcheroo to adn stalwart? Is Unistrut a traitor ?
Aes: Do I feel betrayed? No, not really. I was surprised that he became so angry at the Meritocracy so shortly after he left. I was taken completely off guard by that, and I frankly don’t like the situation. I’d much rather Unistrut be a friend to us than an enemy. I respect the guy immensely, and I have him to thank for even giving me the chance to become Consul, by naming me Praetor and Vice Consul during his term. And no, I don’t consider him a traitor either. He simply had a difference of opinion of what direction the Meritocracy ought to take than many Senators, myself included, do. I am a bit disappointed that he has chosen to be rather provocative and act against our interests at times, is all.
VOTP: What’s your overall view on the adn? Was the martial maneuver effective or ineffective from your point of view and is the current articles of alliance structure showing signs of any improvement so far?
Aes: I’m afraid I can’t comment on that. I simply don’t have enough knowledge of the history of the ADN’s internal workings.
VOTP: Do you see any radical changes in meritocracy foreign policy on the horizon?
Aes: Radical? I doubt we’ll turn into invaders anytime soon. Historically, the Senate has always been rather conflicted between taking the foreign policy positions of isolationism, neutrality, or involvement with defender organizations such as the ADN. I cannot foresee what path the Meritocracy will take in the future, but no matter what path we take, I hope we will be respected in the world.
VOTP: Most importantly what do you think of the VOTP?
Aes: Ha! Well, I read a bit of your stuff, and you seem to be doing a great job. A bit rough on the loaded questions, though. I’ll have to tell our own News service to take a look at yours for some examples of good journalism.
VOTP: Thank you for your time we at the Voice of the Proletariat are very grateful!
Aes: You’re very welcome.
