Smoking is definitly bad. It should be absolutly forbiddent in public places, and the laws should be strictly enforced (zero tolerance on that subject. In France, 450€ (about $700) of bill if you get caugth).
If you wish to harm your health do it in the privacy of your own home or in open air area.
And thanks Mr Evin, there is no more tobacco advertizing here in France. ;D
EDIT : And not to forget, ever raising cigarette's price is a good thing for everybody ! (around 5-6€ currently here)

Thank god for the state... protecting its citizens by censoring advertisment. What would we do without it? Think for ourselves maybe?

You got me there. (In all seriousness, Jako, you are probably right. But down with the state anyway!)

Frankly I believe that a ban on smoking would be a total waste of time and resources. Look how well the ban on alcohol worked in the US during prohibition. What a resounding success that was!! Increasing taxation in these days of international travel is also a no-brainer as all it does is create a thriving black market economy. Should an individual choose to damage their own health by indulging in this kind of activity then surely it is their right to choose to do so. No one could possibly argue the point that they were not aware of the risks involved anymore.

Yeah, I thought of that as well. Banning smoking would give organised crime a field day.

Note Al Capone's movement rose thanks to prohibition. This itself makes enough of an argument to protest a ban of smoking.

Well, Ketoprofen is a smoker too so he's biased, just like I am. So, whom is actually a smoker in TPC? Would be interesting to know!

I'm not a smoker, but I'm opposed to an outright ban. If peopl want to poison themselves fine. If people don't want to breathe the smoke, also fine. I support a non-smoking section in all public areas, and bars should be non-smoking to protect the health of the workers. I also support the installation of proper ventilation in public areas to reduce the damage caused by second hand smoke. But i only oppose smoking when faced with people who use the phrase "Fresh air fascist". Then it's just fun.

Banning completely? NO! Banning it in public places? Absolutely, with the exception of bars, which should be able to decide for themselves whether to follow the ban.
I agree with everything Lucky Seaville said. It sums up my opinion completely.

Is it fine to let people poison themselves? That's a very individualist view. Do members of a society not have any interest in looking after each other?

obviously it would be better if they idn't. however, at the end of the day, free will wins over. we must highlight the dangers of smoking, and end cigarette advertising, but as long as people are aware of the health risks, there's nothing that can be done. to stop people poisoning themselves if they wish to would infringe upon their personal freedoms
